YF-21 Macross Plus (Yamato)

Hello all! Well, it has been four years as of today since I started this blog. After many failed attempts at starting a review/photography site, this one is here to stay. So, what better way to celebrate this anniversary than by reviewing the last in the Macross Plus Yamato line, the YF-21. The first review I've done on this site was the VF-11B in the Yamato line of figures.  Then, later on, I did the YF-19 and eventually Yoko Littner from the Yamato Neuromancer line.

But to the point, let's get going on the YF-21 from Macross Plus!

The YF-21 like the YF-19 is a prototype Valkyrie from Macross Plus. But does the figure hold up to its development counterpart?

Let's start with the box

Starting off with the box.

Unboxing

Here we have everything the figure comes with.
A pretty simple loadout.

Appearance
Here is the figure and all its glory.

The figure also has some nice details.

For instance, the coloring on the multi-sensor face is pretty well done.

We have a nice YF-21 printed across the yead, with a nice yellow to offset the blue.

The UN Spacy logo shines brightly against the blue.

The cockpit has a nice grey. The grey has two shades here.

The arms also have these two machine guns coming out the sleeves. The small bit of detail here really makes me appreciate the figure a bit more.

The crown of all this detail, however, is the backpack. The silver chrome peaks out and really give an excellent idea of what is going on under the armor.

Looking inside the thruster, you see a nice silver inner frame.

We have little black details all over the figure.

The bits of mechanical detail here really reminds me that yes, this is a jet.

Articulation
Let's dive into the articulation.
Now the first major issue comes with the head articulation. While it can look down with some ease, it does get caught on the chest armor.

However, that isn't the main issue with the head. The real problem is that due to the backpack, the head can't really make a true move left or right look. This is because it gets stuck.

But it can do the left and right movement.

However, you can remove the backpack.

Removing the backpack frees up the head to move left and right freely.

But it still can't look up, that is just due to the design of the head. Also, keep in mind that it is the backpack pretty much holding this figure together.

Moving on to the arms, they are on a ball joint which lets us move the arms out this far.

We can rotate all around, but this is only once you extend it out as far as it can go, for it will get caught on the backpack.

And here is where we have another issue. When moving the arm around, it popped out.

Moving on, the elbows have a nice bend.

The hand is on the ball joint.

The side binders are also on a ball joint, meaning they can pretty much move however they want.

But the binders are also on a peg, which allows them to have even more freedom to move around.

Only being limited by the backpack.

But this is also another part that easily comes off.

The leg can extend this far up.

Can rotate inwards and outwards.

We have a nice knee bend.

Although, sometimes the knee cover will get stuck and the leg can't return back to normal.

The foot can move up.
Move down.
And rotate left and right, all thanks to the ball joint.

And for the final test, can it turn in to a ball?

Accessories

Moving on to accessories, we are actually going to start with something that not have been intentional. The shields are on the arm are removable.

Moving on, we have the two closed fists.

Two opened hands.

And a trigger hand.

Then we move on to the gun. Which looks really good.

Can't really get a good pose because the open hand can't really hold the gun.

Wait...there we go.

Size Comparison

Now let's look at the size.

Conclusion

So, what are my thoughts on this figure? Well, the first significant issue is the limited head articulation. I blame this more on the design of the figure/mecha itself rather than the figure itself. A cosmetic limitation.

The other issue is the loose parts. As mentioned the arm literally popped out of its socket.

The binder on the leg can easily pop off as well.

And, if you may have noticed, a part was missing from a good chunk of this review. A blue fin fell off from under the left side of the shoulder.

I spent a good hour or so looking for this darn thing.

Thank you so much liquid cement.

Another little issue that is more of an annoyance is the yellow antenna on the top. It's actually pretty sharp, but not as sharp as the VF-11B's bayonet.

I guess a trivial matter is that I can't really attach a stand to it. Unlike on the YF-19.

But other than that, I think the figure is pretty good. It is very unique in design and has some fantastic colors to it. The articulation is pretty good despite its limitations. I think it is a nice figure to have and it's pretty nice to have the full set of Macross Plus Yamato figures completely. My only real complaint is the loose parts on the figure, but that is something that is fixable.

I give this figure a pass and highly recommend it to any Macross fan out there.

Again everyone just wanted to say thank you to everyone who has supported me over the years. I've been really enjoying doing these reviews, and because of this, it has really pushed my photography, and I've made so many connections and friends because of this. So to all of you, thank you ^^
